The competition is for recent portraits of Canadian
subjects by Canadian artists. A portrait will be
interpreted to mean a picture of a specific person or
persons, but there are no strict requirements. There is
no limitation on style, and contemporary and
experimental portraits are welcome. The portrait must be
based upon a meeting in person between the artist and
subject, and the subject must sign a statement on the
entry form to confirm that this has happened.
Photographs of the subject taken by the artist may be
used for reference purposes. The competition is governed
by the following detailed rules.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
1. The competition for the Kingston Prize is open to
Canadian artists. For the purposes of this competition,
“Canadian” shall, in every instance, be interpreted to
mean a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed
immigrant) of Canada. Employees and Board members of the
Kingston Arts Council, members of The Kingston Prize
2009 Steering Committee, and the Jury, are not eligible.
WHAT IS ELIGIBLE
2. Each artist may enter one portrait.
3. For the purposes of this competition, “portrait”
shall be interpreted to mean a picture of a person or
persons. Group portraits and self-portraits are
acceptable.
4. To be eligible for the competition, an entry must
meet the following conditions:
a) It must be a portrait of a specific Canadian
person or persons;
b) It must be a painting or a drawing;
c) It must be produced entirely during the 24
months preceding May 1, 2009.
d) The dimensions, including the frame, must not
exceed 200 centimetres height ´ 200 centimetres
width ´ 10 centimetres depth;
e) The artist must meet with subject for the
purpose of making the portrait; photographs of the
subject taken by the artist may be used for
reference purposes.
PROCEDURES FOR ENTERING THE
COMPETITION
5. To enter the competition, an artist must send the
following materials to the Kingston Arts Council office:
a) A completed entry form, including statements
signed by the artist and by the subject; the form is
available at the website www.kingstonprize.ca ;
b) A CD carrying two digital images of the
portrait entered, meeting technical specifications
given on the entry form;
c) The non-refundable entry fee of $25.00 by
money order or certified cheque payable to Kingston
Arts Council;
d) A self-addressed stamped postcard for
confirmation of receipt.
6. Entries must be received by mail or delivered in
person at the Kingston Arts Council office before 5.00
pm Friday May 1, 2009.
7. From the entries received, the jury will select a
shortlist of portraits to be included in The Kingston
Prize Exhibition. The artists will be notified as to who
has been selected to exhibit their work. Further
detailed instructions will be sent a that time.
8. The paintings selected for the Exhibition must be
shipped or delivered to the exhibition site to arrive on
or before Wednesday September 30, 2009.
9. The artist is responsible for all charges relating
to delivery of the portrait both to and from the
exhibition site. The charge for return shipping must be
prepaid unless the portrait is to be picked up in
person. The artwork must be appropriately packaged for
transport. Shipping materials will be re-used for return
shipment. If packing materials are not useable for
return shipping, the artist will be charged for the
materials required.
10. Paintings must be suitably equipped with D-rings
and wire for hanging, and must be clearly identified
with the name of the artist on the back. Dimensions
including the frame (if any) will be requested for the
portraits to be exhibited.
11. Portraits must be completed at the time the image
is taken and submitted to the competition. Entries which
have been changed subsequently will not be accepted into
the final exhibition.
12. An exhibition fee based on CARFAC rate guidelines
will be paid for every painting exhibited.
13. The jury will choose the winner of the Kingston
Prize after viewing the portraits received, and the
Prize will be awarded at a public reception.
14. The decisions of the jury are final and no
correspondence will be entered into.
15. Kingston Arts Council will take all due care with
the paintings received, but will not be responsible for
any loss or damage to artworks whatsoever, however
caused, while in its custody. Each entrant is
responsible for maintaining his/her own insurance
coverage.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
16. Paintings must be available continuously for
exhibition for a period of at least six months, and will
be returned at the end of the exhibition.
17. Entrants shall allow the Kingston Arts Council to
photograph their works while in its custody, and to
reproduce their work by print or electronic means for
the purposes of documentation and archiving of the
exhibition, and for advertising the competition,
including subsequent catalogues, brochures and posters.
18. Any future revisions to these rules will be
posted on the website
www.kingstonprize.ca .
SIGNIFICANT DATES
19. Following are the significant dates. The Kingston
Arts Council reserves the right to make small
adjustments to these dates.
- 5.00 pm Friday May 1, 2009 Closing
date for receipt of entries.
- July 2009 Announcement of portraits selected
for exhibition.
- September 30, 2009 Deadline for delivery of
selected paintings.
- October 8, 2009 Gala Preview and awarding of
the Kingston Prize.
- October 9-31, 2009 Exhibition open to the
public.
